What are the most significant prospects for 2022 in the energy sector in terms of the energy transition on the road to net zero? Several global experts offer their forecasts.
Crystal ball gazing is a notoriously tricky business, especially when it comes to forecasting the year ahead in terms of the energy transition.
The sector is still dealing with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and we wait to see whether there will be significant moves to build back better or greener. Price volatility continues with oil prices reaching new highs for the first time in several years. Carbon pricing is also an important issue in a bid to cut emissions and limit global warming to 1.5°C. Geopolitically, we seem to be living on a knife edge with big questions hanging over Russian gas supply and the Nord Stream pipeline, for example. Meanwhile, the International Energy Agency is calling for cessation of new oil and gas production ventures, although new initiatives are on the horizon.
Renewables investment and electrification are gathering pace, and there is considerable innovation in terms of battery technology, small nuclear reactors, offshore wind, solar, carbon capture and storage (CCS), direct air capture (DAC), the hydrogen economy and much else besides. Here, we invite a number of experts to give their predictions for 2022.
