The Transmission System Operators (TSOs) of Continental Europe trialled a synchronising of the Continental European Power System with Ukraine and Moldova’s power systems on 16 March following an emergency request from the two countries.

Continental European TSOs are now supporting the Ukranian-Moldovan power system’s stability following the acceleration of a synchronisation project that has been ongoing since 2017, according to ENTSO-E (the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity).

ENSTO-E reports that this was made possible due to previous studies and the adoption of risks mitigation measures. It will allow local operators Ukrenergo and Moldelectrica to maintain stability of the two electricity systems.

Kadri Simson, European Commissioner for Energy, praised the association’s work: ‘I want to thank the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) for doing a year’s work in two weeks to make this happen.’

ENTSO-E represents 42 TSOs from 35 European countries, responsible for the safe and coordinated operation of Europe’s electricity system.

The Continental Europe Synchronous Area (CESA) is the largest synchronous electrical grid in the world. It operates at a synchronised frequency of 50 Hz and supplies electricity to more than 400mn people in 24 countries. TSOs in CESA maintain the frequency at 50 Hz to maintain stability across the system. This requires a balancing of energy resources and consumption across the area.
