Stellantis and LG Energy Solution (LGES) are investing more than C$5bn ($4.1bn) in a joint venture to build a large-scale electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing facility in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Stellantis and LGES have entered binding agreements to establish the plant that will produce lithium-ion battery cells and modules. They aim to begin construction of the new facility, located in Canada’s largest automotive cluster, later this year.

Plans are for the plant to be operational in 2024, to provide around 2,500 new jobs and to have an annual production capacity of more than 45 GWh. The Municipal, Provincial and Federal levels of the Canadian government have all agreed to support the successful operation of the new joint venture company.

The move forms part of Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan which has a target of reaching 5mn annual battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales by 2040, achieving 100% of the passenger car BEV sales mix in Europe and 50% of the passenger car and light-duty truck BEV sales mix in North America.

Including this most recent announcement, LGES has secured an annual production capacity of over 200 GWh in North America, equivalent to the production of 2.5mn EVs.
