The Biden-Harris Administration has released a landmark strategy which aims to cut all greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from the US transportation sector by 2050.

The National Blueprint for Transportation Decarbonisation has been developed by the US Departments of Energy, Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and the US Environmental Protection Agency, and is the first milestone deliverable of the memorandum of understanding signed by the agencies in September 2022.

The Blueprint will be followed by more detailed decarbonisation action plans, to be developed and implemented by the agencies in cooperation with governments at the state, local and tribal level, philanthropic organisations, the private sector and global partners.

The US transportation network, which includes all modes of travel (land, air and sea), accounts for a third of all domestic GHG emissions, according to the Department of Energy (DOE).

Advanced EV battery technology
Meanwhile, the US DOE has announced $42mn in funding for projects with the aim of strengthening the domestic supply chain for advanced electric vehicle (EV) batteries.

The Electric Vehicles for American Low-Carbon Living Programme has selected 12 projects from universities, national laboratories and the private sector which aim to expand domestic EV adoption by developing batteries that last longer, charge faster, perform efficiently in freezing temperatures and have better overall range retention.

The DOE is directly supporting President Biden’s goals for EVs to make up half of all domestic vehicles sales in in 2030.
