TotalEnergies has started up commercial operation of its fourth large-scale solar power plant in Japan, with partners Suzuka Group and Tohoku Electric.
The 51 MW facility is located in Tsu, Mie Prefecture, and will supply electricity to Chubu Electric Power Miraiz, a subsidiary of the regional utility company, through a power purchase agreement (PPA) over a 17-year period, as well as some 20,000 Japanese households.
Covering nearly 77 hectares and built in just two years, the Haze power plant features nearly 100,000 solar panels, the supports and foundations of which have been designed to withstand earthquakes and typhoons.
TotalEnergies currently operates more than 150 MW of cumulative capacity in Japan. In addition to the 51 MW Haze plant, it also operates the 27 MW Nanao solar facility that came onstream in 2017, and the Miyako (25 MW; onstream 2019) and Osato (52 MW; 2021) solar farms.
The company is building a global portfolio of electricity and renewables projects as part of its ambition to get to net zero emissions by 2050. At the end of 2022, it had 17 GW of gross renewable electricity generation installed capacity, with plans to increase this to 35 GW of gross production capacity from renewable sources and storage by 2025, and 100 GW by 2030.
