The three millionth solar power system has been installed in Germany, with total installed capacity in the country now exceeding 70 GW, according to the German Solar Industry Association (BSW).

Germany’s rooftop photovoltaic (PV) market is experiencing robust demand with nearly 350,000 new PV systems recorded this year, with the 4mn mark expected to be passed as early as next year, reports BSW. Solar power now covers more than 10% of German electricity demand.

‘Under the impact of the energy crisis and as a result of improved framework conditions, the demand for solar technology has risen sharply. Solar energy is booming, especially among private households,’ explains BSW Managing Director Carsten Körnig.

According to BSW, more than twice as many solar panels were installed on homes in 1Q2023 than 1Q2022. More and more residents of rental apartments are also purchasing plug-in solar devices or balcony power plants.

But the pace of PV expansion must be further accelerated, says Körnig: ‘In order to achieve the desired pace of solarisation, we will have to install around 30% more solar power capacity every year over the next four years than in the previous year.’ Last year, this goal was achieved.

According to BSW, demand for PV should also pick up among commercial investors. At the beginning of May, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck announced the dismantling of further market barriers to market, grid and land access as part of a joint PV summit with the solar industry.
