The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE) is a hotbed of energy technology research and development. New Energy World Features Editor Brian Davis gives a taste of what’s on offer at one of Europe’s largest energy research centres.

When it comes to technology research and development, there’s no better place to start than the Fraunhofer Energy Alliance. The Alliance is one of the largest energy research organisations in Europe and a portal to energy related research programmes offered by the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany.

Research covers the spectrum from digitalisation, renewable energy sources and energy systems analysis, to energy storage and energy efficiency technologies. Here is a taste of what is on offer in terms of innovative products and new market initiatives, often in concert with industry partners of all sizes.

Hydrogen technologies
Hydrogen is a hot topic. The Fraunhofer Institute is carrying out extensive research on the production, conversion and thermochemical processing of hydrogen as a fuel. A key area of focus for hydrogen production is polymer-electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolysis to develop new fuel cell systems for the transport sector.
