Sinopec has begun operation of a green hydrogen pilot project in Kuqa City, in Aksu Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China, while CNOOC has connected the Muguang solar farm to the grid.

Sinopec's mega-project is claimed to be the largest solar-to-hydrogen project in the world and the first of its kind in China to be equipped with a photovoltaic (PV) power generation complex, power transmission and transformation lines, as well as facilities for water electrolysis hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and transportation, and supporting auxiliary production.

The project, which will serve as a demonstration for green hydrogen refining and production in China, will produce 20,000 t/y of green hydrogen by using solar power to electrolyse water, along with the capacity to store 210,000 m3  of hydrogen and transport 28,000 m3/h.

Hydrogen will be supplied to Sinopec’s Tahe Refining and Chemical, helping it reduce CO2 emissions by an estimated 485,000 t/y.

CNOOC’s first onshore PV project now grid-connected
Meanwhile, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has announced that the Muguang solar farm, the company’s first onshore centralised PV power generation project, has been connected to the grid.

Located in Gannanzhou Cooperation City, Gansu Province, and covering an area of about 930,000 m2, the project has an installed capacity of 6 MW, with 12 MW/2 MWh energy storage facilities.

The project features a high-bracket design, with the upper space used for PV power generation and the lower space available for animal grazing by local farmers.

Shanghai Electric reveals dual carbon action plan
In other news, Shanghai Electric has unveiled a ‘dual carbon action plan’ under which it is aiming to achieve a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by 2030 compared to 2020 levels, and reaching full value chain carbon neutrality by 2055.

The company also reports that its coal-fired Datang Dongying power plant has broken global records for the lowest coal consumption, at 248.86 g/kWh, while achieving an efficiency of 49.4%.

Meanwhile, the company claims that the fifth unit of the Changlongshan pumped storage power station is the first of its kind. Located in Anji County, Zhejiang Province, it features a rated water head of 710 metres and a reversible unit with an output of over 300 MW.
