Nigeria’s Aba Integrated Power Project (Aba IPP) – thought to be the first of its kind in the country – has been officially commissioned in south-eastern Abia State.
Geometric Power’s Aba IPP is said to be the first independent and integrated power utility in Nigeria, capable of generating and distributing 141 MW of its produced power across nine local government areas within the Aba ring-fenced zone.
Commissioned by the Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, HE Kashim Shettima, at a ceremony last month, the vertically integrated Aba IPP can supply power to its immediate community (the city of Aba), prioritising local needs and distributing surplus power to Nigeria’s national power grid.
The Aba IPP is equipped with three GE LM6000 gas turbines, with a capacity to produce up to 47 MW each. The power plant also has a 27 km gas pipeline to ensure consistent fuel supply, three rehabilitated distribution substations, five new additional substations and 140 km of 33 kV/11 kV power lines using fibre optic cables for data communication.
Strategically positioned in the industrial south-east of Nigeria, the Aba metropolis is known for its cottage and small-scale industries specialising in the craftsmanship of leather goods, fabrics and related services.
Abia State reportedly only receives 11.8% of power from the national grid to be distributed across its and neighbouring states, equating to about 470 MW.
The project was financed by Afreximbank, who signed a $50mn term loan facility with Geometric Power in 2021.
