The Nautical Sunrise consortium reports that its offshore floating solar (OFS) demonstrator project has secured €6.8mn of European funding that will pave the way for what it claims will be the ‘world’s largest OFS power installation’.

The €8.4mn ($7.4mn) project is being developed by a consortium of 15 companies and will be located on the German utility company RWE’s OranjeWind offshore wind farm, also known as Hollandse Kust West VII, located off the west coast of the Netherlands. The funding has been made available under the European Commission’s Horizon Europe research programme.

The 5 MW project will use modular OFS technology from SolarDuck. According to the Dutch-Norwegian company, its ‘unique elevated platform technology’ allows photovoltaic (PV) panels ‘to be deployed in significant wave heights whilst maintaining a safe working environment for access and maintenance and minimising environmental impact’.
