Global commodities company Trafigura has signed a six-year offtake agreement with Syzygy Plasmonics, to buy sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Syzygy’s commercial facility in Uruguay.

The binding deal covers the full output from Syzygy’s biogas-to-SAF project, NovaSAF 1, in Durazno. Nameplate production capacity is 1.8mn l/y. The deal also includes an option for Trafigura to purchase additional volumes from Syzygy’s future projects. The plant is expected to begin deliveries in 2028.

Syzygy's technology converts biogas into SAF using renewable electricity through a light-driven chemical reactor process. The pathway has received International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) pre-certification to produce renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) and advanced bioSAF compliant fuels.

If completed as planned, NovaSAF-1 would be the first electrified biogas-to-SAF facility producing RFNBO-compliant SAF. The plant will use biogas from the Estancias Del Lago powdered milk plant and renewable power from Uruguay’s electricity system to produce synthetic paraffinic kerosene SAF.

Syzygy says the fuel could reduce lifecycle emissions by around 90% compared with conventional jet fuel.
