New technology tested to balance low-voltage distribution grids

UK Power Networks is trialling a new smart device designed to help electricity networks handle growing demand from low-carbon technologies without major infrastructure upgrades.
The project, a partnership between UK Power Networks and Ecojoule Energy and Fundamentals, will see five smart units installed on existing electricity poles. The devices aim to manage power flows on low-voltage electricity distribution networks, where most homes and small businesses are connected.
The technology works by redistributing electricity across the network’s three phases. Imbalances can occur when one phase becomes overloaded while others remain underused. The ‘EcoVAR’ device automatically shifts power to less heavily loaded lines, with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing the risk of local network constraints.
The first unit has been installed in Graveney Bridge, Kent, near Faversham. Data from the trial will be used to assess how effectively the system balances the network. The units can be monitored and updated remotely.
Luca Grella, Head of Innovation at UK Power Networks, said: ‘The EcoVAR trial is helping us understand how digital solutions can deliver real improvements for customers at street level.’
