Renewable fuel producer EcoCeres has officially inaugurated Malaysia’s first sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Pasir Gudang, Johor.

Located near the Singapore border, the facility has the capacity to produce up to 420,000 t/y of SAF, hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and renewable naphtha.

Commissioning and start-up of the plant were successfully achieved in October 2025, with the first SAF cargo exported to Europe in December. Europe is expected to account for most of the demand for the plant’s output.

‘The Johor plant is a major step forward for EcoCeres’ regional platform and for Malaysia’s renewable fuel industry,’ said Matti Lievonen, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong-based EcoCeres at the opening ceremony last month.

Dr Peter Lee, Chairman of Towngas and Principal of Full Vision Capital – a founding investor in EcoCeres – added that EcoCeres’ journey from a Hong Kong laboratory to a global SAF producer demonstrated how regional sustainability initiatives can contribute to global climate solutions. ‘With supportive government policies and the dedication of all our partners, we can turn the tide on climate change for future generations,’ he said.

EcoCeres developed its own proprietary waste-to-fuel processes and scaled them through its first facility in Zhangjiagang, China, which opened in 2021. With the Johor plant operational, the company’s combined global renewable fuels capacity is now approximately 770,000 t/y.
