‘Offshore wind is a strategic energy source that can help energy security in the Asia-Pacific’, said Lisbeth Norup Frømling, Senior Vice President for Quality, Health, Safety and Environment at Ørsted, Vice-Chair of G+ and moderator at an insightful technology session at International Energy Week 2026. The pace is accelerating, with demand for new regulatory frameworks in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) as well as calls for a collaborative open approach to floating offshore technology innovation. New Energy World Features Editor Brian Davis reports.
The Asia-Pacific region is estimated to have at least 222 GW of opportunity for offshore wind development up to 2030. Key to success will be development of the supply chain at a fast pace that will scale and cross borders.
‘Fortunately, the pace of offshore wind energy is accelerating in sustainable ways,’ explained Sayuri Watanabe, Head of Asia-Pacific at World Forum Offshore Wind, who set the scene for Japan’s energy transition ambitions.
She explained that Japan’s energy policy is guided by a framework known as S+3E, which is structured around four pillars: safety, energy security, economic efficiency and environment, developed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and revised every three to five years.
