Türkiye’s industrial heartland is undergoing a green transformation, with organised industrial zones (Organize Sanayi Bölgesi – OSB) emerging as critical engines of decarbonisation and green energy development. Beyza Gündüz reports from Istanbul.
In September 2025, the OSTIM Organized Industrial Zone (OSTIM OSB) in Ankara achieved a national government Silver-level Green OSB certification. This marked a significant milestone in the country’s push to align industrial production with environmental standards.
This expansion is unfolding against a backdrop of surging renewable energy capacity. Türkiye’s solar power installations grew 26% year-on-year to reach 24.7 GW capacity by November 2025, up from 19.6 GW in 2024, while renewables account for 62% of the country’s total installed energy production capacity of 121.8 GW. The industrial sector, which consumed 1.7mn TJ of energy in 2024, is increasingly channelling this renewable boom into manufacturing operations through shared infrastructure models pioneered in Green OSBs.
‘The Green OSB certification operates on a tiered system – Bronze, Silver and Gold – with ratings based on performance across energy efficiency, resource management, waste reduction and environmental compliance,’ explains Mustafa Kürşat Şahiner, Green Transformation and Sustainability Manager at OSTIM OSB. ‘OSTIM OSB’s Silver-level achievement demonstrates substantial progress towards sustainable operations.’
