Major banks quit climate alliance

The recent withdrawal of major banks in the US, Canada, Australia and Japan from the Net Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA) could weaken the speed of decarbonisation and encourage other financial institutions to deprioritise their climate commitments, according to a report by the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA).

COP28 opens with over $400mn pledged to loss and damage fund

In what was billed as a ‘historic’ announcement at the start of the COP28 climate summit, governments collectively pledged more than $400mn to a loss and damage fund for developing countries that have suffered the effects of climate change. The figure rose to some $660mn within days as more countries pledged funds.

Report highlights disconnection between major international banks’ net zero words and deeds

Despite major international banks setting targets to tackle climate change, the current ambition and scope of their actions ‘remain insufficient to meet climate goals’, according to the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) Centre. Its latest analysis finds that 85% of the banks studied remain willing to finance new coal projects; none have pledged to phase out coal financing in alignment with the 1.5°C warming target; and only 8% have committed to ending project financing of new oil and gas fields.

Potential pension fund losses should not deter high-income countries from bold climate action

An argument sometimes cited against climate action is that fossil fuel investment losses could impact people’s retirement or long-term savings plans. However, a recent study suggests that the loss of fossil fuel assets would have a minimal impact on the general populace. Most financial losses would be borne by the most affluent individuals in high-income countries, for whom the loss makes up only a small percentage of their total wealth. As a result, governments should not be deterred from taking bold action to help mitigate climate change and meet net zero emissions targets.

Sizing the costs if the fossil fuel bubble bursts

While efforts have been made to shore up the stability of the global financial system since 2008, regulators are lagging behind in implementing rules that adequately mitigate the risks of climate change and net zero on banks and insurers. So says a new report that suggests that without robust capital requirements in place, the socio-economic impacts of a fossil fuel-led financial crisis could be severe, with huge job losses predicted and a global bailout of $4.9tn potentially required to keep banks afloat.

Electrification of industry could deliver more than 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions reductions needed by industry to help reach the UK’s net zero targets, so long as a supportive policy environment is in place. So finds a new report from the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC) and the Aldersgate Group. Meanwhile, European trade association Eurelectric is calling for an ‘Electrification Bank’ to be established, to support industry electrification across Europe.

Enthusiastic response to European Hydrogen Bank pilot auction

The pilot auction for renewable hydrogen production in Europe attracted 132 bids from projects located in 17 European countries, representing a total planned electrolyser capacity of 8.5 GWe. Meanwhile, the European Commission (EC) has approved a third Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI ) in the hydrogen value chain, which it says will ‘establish the first regional infrastructure clusters in several member states’.
