Oil markets are undergoing significant shifts as global oil supply growth is set to outpace demand through 2030, driven by slowing consumption in China and reduced US shale expansion, according to the latest International Energy Agency (IEA) outlook. Meanwhile, new analysis from E3G and Zero Carbon Analytics reveals that while more countries are signalling a move away from fossil fuels in their updated climate plans, only a few have made concrete commitments, leaving the pace of change too slow to meet global climate targets.

NGO report calls for fossil fuel tax to help poor countries recover from climate change damage

A tax on the extraction of fossil fuels in the world’s richest advanced economies could raise $720bn by the end of the decade to support the world’s most vulnerable facing climate damages, according to a new report backed by over 100 climate organisations worldwide including Christian Aid, Greenpeace, Climate Action Network, Stamp Out Poverty and Power Shift Africa.

Historic ‘turning point’ as fossil fuels show peak or plateau, says the IEA

The global energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is causing profound and long-lasting changes that have the potential to hasten the transition to a more sustainable and secure energy system, according to the latest edition of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) World Energy Outlook (WEO). The report has found that, for the first time, global demand for each of the fossil fuels shows a peak or plateau across all WEO scenarios, with Russian exports in particular falling significantly as the world energy order is reshaped.
