Saudi Aramco CEO calls phasing out oil and gas a ‘fantasy’

Saudi Aramco President and CEO Amin H Nasser said that the current energy transition strategy is ‘visibly failing’ on a number of fronts and has called on countries to abandon the ‘fantasy’ of phasing out oil and gas. The contentious remarks from the head of the world’s largest oil producer were made in the same week as a new report from IRENA concludes that an ‘urgent global course correction’ is needed to meet the COP28 goal of tripling renewables power capacity by 2030.

Early days for COP30

There are mixed tidings from COP30 in Belém, Brazil, this week. On the positive front, there is new green grid investment from some of the leading global multilateral development banks. At least one oil major has committed to extending renewables investment while others pull back; but climate activists and indigenous communities are concerned that the Summit is mostly a talking shop and their lives are still in danger, despite promises of a just transition.

NGO report calls for fossil fuel tax to help poor countries recover from climate change damage

A tax on the extraction of fossil fuels in the world’s richest advanced economies could raise $720bn by the end of the decade to support the world’s most vulnerable facing climate damages, according to a new report backed by over 100 climate organisations worldwide including Christian Aid, Greenpeace, Climate Action Network, Stamp Out Poverty and Power Shift Africa.
