Whitby hydrogen village – just a pipe dream?

In May 2022, Whitby, close to Ellesmere Port in Cheshire, UK, was shortlisted as the site for a two-year ‘hydrogen village’ scheme to assess the suitability of hydrogen as a domestic energy source by British Gas and Cadent, the country’s largest gas distribution network. However, the project has provoked a fierce backlash from the local community. Whitby resident Kate Grannell offers her thoughts here.

Recent technology advances in the US could transform the viability of geothermal electricity generation in the UK, with the additional benefit of heat from the power cycle supplying district heat networks at very low cost. UK district heating gets technical standards boost

District heating received a boost in January 2026 with the provision of new updates by the government to its regulatory structure and additional stakeholder engagement information. As part of the package, fresh technical requirements and a Heat Network Technical Assurance Scheme (HNTAS) are being introduced to help heat network operators demonstrate compliance. The Scheme is to be phased in over time, with a planned launch in 2027, once policy proposals are consulted on and finalised. The consultation period is currently live, writes Nnamdi Anyadike.

Tapping rivers for their heat

Dams are not the only way to harness the natural power of rivers. Communities and large users, including the University of East London, which is based in the docklands, are tapping into another aspect of water: its heat, to provide indoor warmth to nearby buildings over the winter months. Underground heating: a review of deep geothermal energy

Geothermal energy’s ability to make a positive contribution to the global energy mix has long been recognised. Unlike solar, it can be used to generate electricity at any time of the day or night. Unlike wind or wave power, its output is also constant. Around 88 countries worldwide are estimated to be using this renewable energy source currently, reports Nnamdi Anyadike.
