Construction starts on Scotland-England subsea connector

Construction has begun on what will be the UK’s longest subsea electricity transmission link, one of four planned ‘electricity superhighways’ that will help decarbonise the country’s energy system. Meanwhile, 10 GW of ‘zombie’ projects have been removed from the grid connection queue to free up vital grid capacity; but more work is needed.

Power grids require $3.1tn investment worldwide by 2030

Renewable energy developments continue at break-neck speed, with $644bn to be spent on new capacity in 2024, but outdated and inadequate power grids could prove to be a significant stumbling block to the energy transition, new research from Rystad Energy has found. If the world is to limit global warming to 1.8°C above pre-industrial levels, $3.1tn of grid infrastructure investments are required before 2030.

British nations to sketch out spatial energy plan

The English, Scottish and Welsh governments have commissioned the newly formed National Energy System Operator (NESO) to develop Great Britain’s first Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSEP), to guide the country’s energy transition. In parallel, the UK government has confirmed amendments to its renewables auction scheme to bring more projects online, while a new demand-side response energy system project aims to optimise energy consumption and enhance grid stability.

Enthusiastic response to European Hydrogen Bank pilot auction

The pilot auction for renewable hydrogen production in Europe attracted 132 bids from projects located in 17 European countries, representing a total planned electrolyser capacity of 8.5 GWe. Meanwhile, the European Commission (EC) has approved a third Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI ) in the hydrogen value chain, which it says will ‘establish the first regional infrastructure clusters in several member states’.

Report calls for urgent industry decarbonisation ramp up

Without decarbonisation intervention, industrial emissions will grow from 6.7bn tonnes of CO₂ this year to 7.6bn tonnes of CO₂/y by 2050, according to a new report from BloombergNEF (BNEF). Further analysis from BNEF has also found that at least $21.4tn will need to be invested in the electricity grid by 2050 to support a net zero trajectory for the world.
