The UK government has failed to prepare for the worsening impacts of climate change, concludes the Climate Change Committee (CCC) in its latest report to Parliament, putting the country’s people, nature and infrastructure at increased risk and threatening the delivery of net zero by 2050.

China sets its first absolute GHG emissions reduction target, as UN climate pledges build momentum

China has set its first-ever absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target, pledging to cut emissions by 7–10% from peak levels by 2035 while scaling up renewables and clean transport. The landmark announcement, made by President Xi at last month’s United Nations Climate Summit, came as nearly 100 nations have now submitted or unveiled new targets ahead of COP30 next month.

UK offers more oil and gas exploration licences amidst call for government to prioritise renewables

The North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has offered a further 31 oil and gas licences in the North Sea, for the first time adding a clause for overlapping oil and gas licences and wind leases. However, the renewables sector is calling for the UK government to be ‘crystal clear’ that its ‘priority is renewables over oil and gas’.

China is badly off track to meet climate targets the country set for 2025, as a result of an increase in coal use and investment in coal power, and a rise in oil consumption, which led to a 5.2% increase in energy sector CO₂ emissions in 2023, suggests new analysis.

Proposed US CCS projects need ‘careful review’

The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently selected five coal-fired power projects for potential funding in its carbon, capture and storage (CCS) programme. However, the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) says the proposed projects need ‘careful review for cost and technology risks’.

China solidifies lead in global electrolyser market

China’s national plan identifies hydrogen as a key element in its low-carbon energy transition strategy, targeting 200,000 t/y of green hydrogen production by the end of 2025. However, the latest analysis from Rystad Energy suggests China will exceed that volume by the end of 2024. It forecasts that about 2.5 GW of hydrogen electrolyser capacity will have been installed by the end of the year, producing 220,000 t/y of green hydrogen, some 6,000 t/y more than the rest of the world combined.
