How to deliver a decarbonised transport network

Transport has represented one of the most intractable challenges as we try to piece together the decarbonisation jigsaw. Responsible for around a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, 95% of the world’s transport energy still comes from fossil fuels. Now, we’re at a critical juncture, as many of the developed western economies, including the UK, have set (some legally enforceable) targets for the end of sale of road vehicles powered by fossil fuels. The targets are linked to the ultimate goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 which means end-of-sale dates for most categories of road vehicles by 2040, or earlier, writes Claire Haigh, Managing Director of Zemo Partnership, the membership organisation for road decarbonisation.

Aviation industry plans for growth are ‘irreconcilable’ with Europe’s climate goals, says new study

Passenger air traffic from EU airports will more than double in 2050 compared to 2019, if projections by aircraft manufacturers Airbus and Boeing materialise, growth that is ‘irreconcilable’ with Europe’s climate goals. So finds a new study by Transport & Environment (T&E), which claims the region’s carbon budget could be depleted as early as 2026 as a result. Plus: SAF project investment is reviewed.

Nations of the Andes power ahead with plans for an interconnected regional electricity market and other grid improvements

The South American countries of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru have signed a declaration underlining a commitment to integrating their electricity grids to form an Andean regional electricity market. In other news, Bolivia is planning significant investments in its electricity infrastructure to enhance capacity and access to energy around the administrative capital of La Paz, while Chile is modernising regulations to improve electricity access and quality in remote regions. Additionally, Bolivia aims to reduce fuel imports with a new biodiesel plant due onstream later this year.
