Zonal pricing should lower the cost of UK electricity by encouraging generators and consumers to come together – report

Following an inquiry into energy grid and grid connections, the UK Parliament’s House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee suggests that regional zonal pricing should enable better use of existing grid capacity and lower the cost of electricity, provided that the transition and its risks are managed well. Chair of the 12-member Select Committee is Baroness Taylor of Bolton.

UN chief calls for a windfall tax and advertising ban for fossil fuels

UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for a windfall tax on the profits of fossil fuel companies to help pay for the fight against climate change, as well as an outright ban on fossil fuel advertising. Meanwhile, newly published reports suggest no new fossil fuel projects will be needed in the transition to net zero; stronger plans are needed to meet the COP28 goal of tripling global renewable capacity by 2030; and Europe is in danger of missing its 2030 net zero targets.

Urgent call for action for long-duration energy storage in the UK

The UK Parliament’s Science and Technology Committee’s new report on long-duration energy storage says the government must act fast to ensure that energy storage technologies can scale up in time to decarbonise the electricity system and ensure energy security by 2035. Meanwhile, a number of new initiatives have been announced, aimed at supporting UK grid stability.

UK district heating gets technical standards boost

District heating received a boost in January 2026 with the provision of new updates by the government to its regulatory structure and additional stakeholder engagement information. As part of the package, fresh technical requirements and a Heat Network Technical Assurance Scheme (HNTAS) are being introduced to help heat network operators demonstrate compliance. The Scheme is to be phased in over time, with a planned launch in 2027, once policy proposals are consulted on and finalised. The consultation period is currently live, writes Nnamdi Anyadike.

Two more CCS projects win UK backing, while global investment soars and offshore innovation takes off

Carbon capture is gaining momentum. The UK government has backed the Acorn and Viking CCS projects, while global CCS investment is set to hit $80bn within five years, according to a new report. At the same time, a new offshore collaboration is looking to scale carbon capture at sea.
