EU plans to slash Russian gas imports by two thirds

The European Commission (EC) has presented proposals to reduce EU dependence on Russian gas by two thirds before the end of 2022, as part of a plan to become independent of all Russian fossil fuels (including oil) well before 2030.

Faced with the Russian invasion of the Ukraine and an extraordinary meeting of 31 member countries on 1 March 2022, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has released a 10-point plan to cut Europe’s reliance on Russian gas imports by next winter.

Despite numerous governments making plans to move to net zero, and climate activists agitating for faster decarbonisation, consumer behaviours are yet to change. In part this is due to obstacles and roadblocks that were not foreseen when the plans were originally implemented but are now being encountered. These include the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the challenges of delivering a multilateral approach. The WPC Energy UK National Committee Expert Workshop 2024 hosted by Deloitte at its London office on 31 October considered these factors and other challenges. Nnamdi Anyadike reports.

US and UK to ban imports of Russian oil

US President Joe Biden imposed an immediate ban on Russian oil and other energy imports on 8 March 2022, in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine. In a co-ordinated announcement, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Britain would phase out all oil imports from Russia, which accounts for about 8% of UK demand, by the end of the year.
