Premium energy basins provide oil and gas as well as upstream decarbonisation opportunities

A select few basins hold the potential for upstream players to decarbonise while continuing to meet oil and gas demand, reports Rystad Energy. However, the race to decarbonise hinges on three crucial factors: accelerating investment, overcoming geographical challenges and modifying existing infrastructure. These changes are essential for unlocking the full potential of these basins and for upstream players to achieve their decarbonisation targets.

Paris Agreement will reverse emissions growth after 2030, shows NDC analysis – plus pre-COP report roundup

Based on the latest NDCs, nationally determined contributions, the UN Climate Change Secretariat has forecast that total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2035, including from countries that have not submitted NDCs, could decrease by 12% compared to 2019 levels with land use, land-use change and forestry. Without land use, land-use change and forestry, emissions would drop by 7% compared to 2019 levels. Before the adoption of the Paris Agreement, emissions were projected to increase by between 20% and 48% compared to 2019 levels.

Global energy-related CO₂ emissions increased in 2023 as exceptional droughts hit hydropower. However, the rise was lower than in 2022 even as total energy demand growth accelerated, thanks to the expansion of technologies such as solar photovoltaics (PV), wind, nuclear and electric vehicles (EVs), according to the latest report from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

China has set its first-ever absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction target, pledging to cut emissions by 7–10% from peak levels by 2035 while scaling up renewables and clean transport. The landmark announcement, made by President Xi at last month’s United Nations Climate Summit, came as nearly 100 nations have now submitted or unveiled new targets ahead of COP30 next month.

EU 2040 emissions reduction target holds its line on climate, but climate groups warn that loopholes threaten its integrity

The European Commission (EC) has proposed maintaining the EU Climate Law target of a 90% reduction in net greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 compared to 1990 levels, but allowing new ‘flexibilities’ in how this target is met. Climate groups have raised concerns, in particular regarding the proposed use of international carbon credits to help meet the target, which they fear could undermine the EU’s climate credibility in the run up to COP30.
