Parties clash as UK energy policy turns into political battleground

Energy has become one of the most fiercely contested issues in British politics, as the main political parties issued new statements setting out sharply diverging visions for the country’s future energy mix. What had once been an area of broad consensus – support for net zero and a transition to cleaner power – is now fracturing under the pressures of rising household bills, industrial competitiveness and ideological divisions over the pace of decarbonisation.

The oil and gas industry is facing a ‘petroleum paradox’ – balancing increasing global demand for its petroleum products alongside growing pressure to transition to low-carbon energy sources in order to reduce emissions and tackle climate change. Many in the sector are diversifying their portfolios by investing in alternative energy sources and technologies; Shell recently provided an update on a planned carbon capture project in Alberta, Canada.

Report calls for urgent industry decarbonisation ramp up

Without decarbonisation intervention, industrial emissions will grow from 6.7bn tonnes of CO₂ this year to 7.6bn tonnes of CO₂/y by 2050, according to a new report from BloombergNEF (BNEF). Further analysis from BNEF has also found that at least $21.4tn will need to be invested in the electricity grid by 2050 to support a net zero trajectory for the world.
