QatarEnergy announces largest ever petrochemical investment

QatarEnergy has made what it says is the company’s largest investment in its history in the petrochemical sector in Qatar, announcing the final investment decision (FID) with Chevron Phillips Chemical Company (CPChem) to build the Ras Laffan Petrochemicals complex, a $6bn integrated olefins and polyethylene facility at Ras Laffan Industrial City.

Leading IOCs skipping blue hydrogen and going green

Leading international oil companies (IOCs) are restructuring their businesses to adopt new energy transition technologies to become integrated energy providers, with top integrated oil companies having so far announced projects to produce over 2.9mn t/y of low carbon hydrogen, according to GlobalData. Green hydrogen projects (produced using electricity from renewable sources) are a particular focus, accounting for some 87% of the projects, says the market analyst (see Fig 1).

‘World-first’ liquid hydrogen corridor to link Oman and northern Europe

A joint development agreement (JDA) has been signed to establish the world’s first liquid hydrogen import corridor, connecting the port of Duqm in Oman, the port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and key logistics hubs in Germany. Meanwhile, TotalEnergies reports that green hydrogen has a key role to play in decarbonising its petrochemicals operations in Antwerp.

New infrastructure plans for large-scale decarbonisation in north-west Europe

Fluxys and Equinor have unveiled plans for a major infrastructure project to transport captured CO₂ to storage sites in the North Sea that they say will offer north-west Europe ‘a robust and flexible solution for large-scale decarbonisation’. The carbon capture and storage (CCS) project is in the feasibility stage, with an investment decision expected by 2025.
