South Korea’s energy transition gathers pace

South Korea has announced key policy developments in its energy transition. The country’s 11th Basic Plan for Long-Term Electricity Supply and Demand (BPLE) aims to expand renewables’ share in the country’s energy mix, while the new OSW Promotion Act will streamline offshore wind development. Such moves are attracting new investment; for example, Deep Wind Offshore is teaming up with KHNP to develop 3 GW of wind projects offshore South Korea, and Vena Energy is committing $200mn to the Yokji offshore wind farm.

While Oman bets big on hydrogen, Kuwait’s ambitious renewables growth plans at the other end of the Persian Gulf may be overheating

Kuwait is planning to grow renewables 15-fold by 2030, but its plan needs more time, according to the latest analysis from Rystad Energy. Elsewhere in the Middle East, Oman has mapped out a $97.48bn investment programme across its energy system through 2032, with green hydrogen taking the largest share, reports the Energy Industries Council.

US to boost annual renewables investment to $114bn by 2031

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in the US will significantly boost annual investment into renewable energy deployment in the country, with a rise from $64bn in 2022 to nearly $114bn expected by 2031, according to Wood Mackenzie.
