Historic ‘turning point’ as fossil fuels show peak or plateau, says the IEA

The global energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is causing profound and long-lasting changes that have the potential to hasten the transition to a more sustainable and secure energy system, according to the latest edition of the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) World Energy Outlook (WEO). The report has found that, for the first time, global demand for each of the fossil fuels shows a peak or plateau across all WEO scenarios, with Russian exports in particular falling significantly as the world energy order is reshaped.

UN chief calls for a windfall tax and advertising ban for fossil fuels

UN Secretary General António Guterres has called for a windfall tax on the profits of fossil fuel companies to help pay for the fight against climate change, as well as an outright ban on fossil fuel advertising. Meanwhile, newly published reports suggest no new fossil fuel projects will be needed in the transition to net zero; stronger plans are needed to meet the COP28 goal of tripling global renewable capacity by 2030; and Europe is in danger of missing its 2030 net zero targets.

Indonesia’s new 10-year electricity plan charts a bold course with 42 GW of renewable capacity, backed by $182bn investment and over 836,000 green jobs, although looming gas shortfalls raise supply concerns for the country. Meanwhile, a Malaysia–Singapore–Vietnam pact is raising hopes for regional grid integration, and to the west Thailand eyes solar, wind and storage to curb LNG reliance and meet climate goals.

Lessons from previous energy transitions

Welcome to the first part of a three-part series exploring the implications of the recently published Energy Institute Statistical Review of World Energy on the pace of the energy transition from Energy Institute Chief Executive Nick Wayth FEI. In part 1, he’ll discuss how energy transitions have occurred historically; what might be the same this time and what might be different. In part 2, he’ll explore a hypothetical version of the world in which the energy transition could be taking place very differently. And finally, in part 3, he’ll try to draw some conclusions on implications for the real world.
