Brave New Energy World – one year on

Last year, the Energy Institute (EI) combined Energy World and Petroleum Review into a single digital, weekly publication with quarterly printed roundups. New Energy World aims to reflect the EI’s purpose of creating a better energy future and accelerating a just global energy transition to net zero. Senior Editor Charlie Bush reflects on some of the magazine’s key findings.

Singapore taps subsea interconnectors for electricity imports

The insular city-state of Singapore is tapping the huge potential offered by subsea electricity connectors to access abundant renewable energy resources in its region. This wealthy country of six million people extends over just 735 km² of land and has an average GDP per head of $90,600. The country needs to import electricity and wants to diversify its energy supply while supporting regional decarbonisation, writes Bernadette Lee.

Voltage missteps triggered the Iberian power outage, says Spanish government – but little consensus exists on who is responsible

Fingers have been pointed in Spain as reports paint differing views of the causes of a cascading power failure on 28 April that plunged Spain and Portugal into darkness for hours. In a report citing miscalculations, inadequate voltage control and improper plant disconnections as key factors behind the blackout, the Spanish government blamed national grid operator Red Eléctrica de España (REE) and private conventional power generators. In its wake, REE and a Spanish electrical utility association traded mutual accusations of blame.

Post-COP drop? Azerbaijan grows renewables but gas still dominates

Azerbaijan’s renewable energy sector received a major boost after hosting the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s Conference of the Parties in November 2024 (COP29), with the government recently upping its green power generation targets. It is, however, facing roll-out challenges, while the country also seeks to maximise exports of natural gas, particularly to Europe as it diversifies its import sources and reduces dependency on Russian gas, writes Paul Cochrane.

EU plans to slash Russian gas imports by two thirds

The European Commission (EC) has presented proposals to reduce EU dependence on Russian gas by two thirds before the end of 2022, as part of a plan to become independent of all Russian fossil fuels (including oil) well before 2030.
