Turbulent times for wind: Ørsted to cut workforce by 25% by 2027, while Ming Yang plans to build new UK wind manufacturing hub

Danish wind developer Ørsted has unveiled plans to slash its global workforce by a quarter – some 2,000 jobs – by the end of 2027, as it refocuses on offshore wind projects in Europe and strengthens competitiveness after a turbulent period for the sector. The move, part of a wider restructuring plan, follows political headwinds in the US and cost pressures across global supply chains. Yet optimism in the sector remains, as China’s Ming Yang has announced plans to invest up to £1.5bn in a new Scottish manufacturing hub for the wind sector, potentially creating thousands of jobs.

Industrial decarbonisation is central to the UK’s strategy for achieving net zero and ensuring long-term environmental and economic sustainability. However, technological progress alone is not sufficient. Securing public trust and delivering a just transition – one that is inclusive, equitable and locally grounded – is essential, write Benjamin Sovacool, Professor of Energy Policy at the University of Sussex, and Anna Wilson, Director, Centre for Research and Development in Adult and Lifelong Learning, the University of Glasgow. Below is an edited and abridged synthesis of UK research on the topic commissioned by the UK Industrial Decarbonisation Research and Innovation Centre (IDRIC) over the last few years.

Blue sky thinking: fighting climate change by avoiding contrails

Recent evidence suggests that civil aviation harms the climate not only through carbon emissions, but also by creating cloud layers that trap the sun’s heat like a blanket. Work done as part of European research is finding ways to reduce their effect by preventing these clouds forming in the first place. Technology currently in trial phase is proving able to reduce the climate effects of aviation by nearly 25%, for an additional fuel cost of 3%, or less, finds New Energy World Senior Editor Will Dalrymple.

Poland’s coal endures but sun shines on alternatives

Coal has powered Poland since the Communist era, a symbol of economic self-sufficiency and national pride. Coal once employed 400,000 workers across 70 mines; today, only 19 pits remain, employing 75,000 people, but they still produce around 60mn t/y. By contrast, nearly 200,000 people work in renewables – a number forecast to reach 300,000 by 2030. Jo Harper reports from Warsaw.

The carbon border shift – UK industries will need to brace for CBAM compliance

The EU is to introduce the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) from 2027, as a way to prevent companies from evading climate regulations by relocating production to countries with less stringent standards. CBAM is set to cover iron and steel, cement, hydrogen and fertilisers. UK business leaders will need to start building a carbon strategy to ensure compliance and remain competitive, writes Lili Strege, Carbon Analyst at CFP Energy.
