Google makes its first investment in long-duration energy storage

Google has signed its first partnership with a long-duration energy storage (LDES) company, Energy Dome, as it looks to meet its growing electricity needs with clean power generation. Alongside the commercial agreement, it has also invested an undisclosed sum in the Italian start-up, which has developed a novel approach to energy storage, using CO₂ held in a dome-shaped ‘battery’.

EU set to install less new solar in 2025 than it did last year – the first annual drop in a decade

SolarPower Europe’s new mid-year market analysis for EU solar forecasts a 1.4% annual decline in installations for 2025. This would mark the first year of negative market growth since 2015, putting the continent’s 2030 targets at risk, it says. However, despite the forecast drop, years of solar boom mean that the EU will just meet its RePower EU 2025 solar target of 400 GW capacity.

Going for gold: UK spin-out wins $1mn for cool technology

Barocal, a UK spin-out company, has won the Gold category of this year’s TERA-Award* for its solid-state cooling system that uses ‘barocaloric’ materials that undergo temperature changes when pressure is applied. The prize was $1mn.

With geothermal refit, remote Atlantic archipelago turns to renewable energy supply

A 5MWe binary geothermal plant will be built on the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, as part of a €24.5mn Exergy International contract from EDA Renováveis (EDAR). The archipelago, officially a Portuguese region, consists of nine volcanic islands in the North Atlantic Ocean hosting a resident population of 236,000.
