International Court of Justice publishes landmark opinion regarding climate change accountability

The UN’s International Court of Justice (ICJ) gave a landmark ‘advisory opinion’ on 23 July stating that nations can be held legally accountable for their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, the opinion is non-binding.

Czech development just the latest news in a booming small modular (nuclear) reactor market

Rolls-Royce SMR and ČEZ have signed an agreement to progress the Czech Republic’s first small modular reactor (SMR) at Temelín. In Canada, ARC Clean Technology’s ARC-100 SMR has cleared Phase 2 of a regulatory review, bringing it one step closer to commercial deployment. Meanwhile, the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency’s latest SMR report reveals a sharp global uptick in SMR deployment, with licensing, financing and construction activity accelerating across diverse reactor technologies.

Two major manufacturers invest in green hydrogen transition in the UK, as hydrogen storage demonstration project publishes findings

Petrochemical producer INEOS and tissue paper manufacturer Kimberly-Clark have made significant investments to convert their UK production facilities from natural gas to green hydrogen. Meanwhile, Exolum reports that a trial at its Immingham terminal has successfully demonstrated how existing energy infrastructure can store hydrogen.

Onshore wind beats solar PV as the lowest-cost renewable energy source in 2024

In 2024, onshore wind was the most affordable source of new renewable electricity in terms of levelised cost of ownership at $0.034/kWh, followed by solar PV at $0.043/kWh, according to IRENA’s new report on renewable power generation costs in 2024. The most expensive source of new renewable energy was concentrated solar power at $0.092/kWh, which compared favourably to battery storage at $0.104/kWh.

World’s largest green ammonia plant powered by off-grid renewables comes online in China

Envision has officially commissioned what it says is the world’s largest and most advanced green hydrogen and ammonia production facility to be powered entirely by an off-grid wind and solar-based energy system. Located in Chifeng, in south-eastern Inner Mongolia, China, the plant is currently delivering 320,000 t/y of green ammonia, with exports due to start in 4Q2025.
