Nations of the Andes power ahead with plans for an interconnected regional electricity market and other grid improvements

The South American countries of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru have signed a declaration underlining a commitment to integrating their electricity grids to form an Andean regional electricity market. In other news, Bolivia is planning significant investments in its electricity infrastructure to enhance capacity and access to energy around the administrative capital of La Paz, while Chile is modernising regulations to improve electricity access and quality in remote regions. Additionally, Bolivia aims to reduce fuel imports with a new biodiesel plant due onstream later this year.

How to avoid future black-outs: UK and Texas grid operators compare and contrast

To better understand the challenges faced by electricity system operators as renewable energy systems are integrated with grids, a Rice University MBA team including Melissa Stark, Linda Capuano, Nish Shanmugham and Lei Zhu, compared two leading system operators: the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) and the UK’s National System Operator (NESO).

NESO’s 25-year view maps potential UK energy transitions to net zero

The UK’s new system operator has published its first Future Energy Scenarios (FES) towards 2050 in the guise of NESO, to help the country plan what will need to happen in UK energy supply and demand to meet the government’s 2050 net zero commitment. The annual publication is in fact the 15th.

Middle East to overtake Asia in gas output in 2025, predicts market report

The Middle East is on track to surpass Asia to become the world’s second-largest gas producer in 2025, ranking only behind North America, according to the latest research and analysis by Rystad Energy. Gas production in the Middle East has grown by about 15% since 2020, and the future growth underscores the determination of regional producers to monetise gas reserves and develop export potential to meet global demand, it says.

UK government takes final investment decision on Sizewell C nuclear plant

The UK government has taken a 44.9% stake in the Sizewell C nuclear power plant and approved a final investment decision on the 3.2 GW capacity, twin-reactor site in Suffolk. Other investors are Canadian private financier La Caisse (20%), utility Centrica (15%), energy company EDF (12.5%) and private backer Amber Infrastructure (7.6%).

Power plant transformations provide a boost to the energy transition in Taiwan and the UK

Two new power plant projects in Taiwan and the UK have focused on gas-fired combustion to reduce carbon emissions and support energy transition policies. GE Vernova has brought the first 1.3 GW gas-fired block online at Taiwan’s Hsinta plant, aiding coal phase-out and grid stability, while Centrica has transformed the UK’s Brigg power plant site into a 150 MW energy park with peaking performance and battery storage capacity.

Masdar-Iberdrola offshore wind partnership powers ahead after German project completion with €5.2bn UK investment

Masdar and Iberdrola have reached two major milestones. They have announced a €5.2bn co-investment in the UK’s East Anglia THREE offshore wind farm, as well as the full energisation of their 476 MW Baltic Eagle project in Germany.
