Fervo Energy’s record-breaking Sugarloaf well in Utah showcases the rapid progress of enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), while a new report finds the US Great Basin alone could supply 10% of the country’s electricity. Globally, the International Energy Agency (IEA) projects geothermal could meet 15% of future power demand if costs fall. Meanwhile, Germany and the UK are advancing supportive policies and identifying high-potential regions, signalling a global shift towards making geothermal a scalable, low-carbon energy source.

Zonal pricing should lower the cost of UK electricity by encouraging generators and consumers to come together – report

Following an inquiry into energy grid and grid connections, the UK Parliament’s House of Lords Industry and Regulators Committee suggests that regional zonal pricing should enable better use of existing grid capacity and lower the cost of electricity, provided that the transition and its risks are managed well. Chair of the 12-member Select Committee is Baroness Taylor of Bolton.

UK government confirms £13.2bn Warm Homes Plan amid criticism of retrofit policy failures

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed full funding for the government’s Warm Homes Plan. However, a recent Parliamentary report has suggested that previous home energy efficiency government support schemes have actually set back efforts to decarbonise home heating and bring down energy bills.

The opening of Thyssenkrupp Nucera’s SOEC and OCOchem’s CO₂ electrolysis pilot plants on one hand, and Wood Mackenzie’s analysis of Australia’s lagging hydrogen sector on the other, reveal the diverging trajectories of global players in the hydrogen economy. While Germany and the US push forward with electrolyser deployments, Australia risks losing its early-mover advantage without stronger policy intervention.

Good news for UK nuclear industry as government lays out billions

Ahead of its spending review, which is to be announced later today, the UK government has announced plans to fund a new nuclear power plant, has chosen a preferred contractor to build the UK’s first small modular reactor (SMR), and plans to invest in UK nuclear defence capabilities. Supplies of uranium to fuel these new projects should hold up, provided necessary investments are forthcoming, according to a recent report.
