QatarEnergy has inaugurated its Ras Laffan and Mesaieed solar PV power plants. With a combined capacity of 875 MW, the projects more than double Qatar’s solar energy production to 1,675 MW of renewable energy.

Poland’s first nuclear plant moves forward with US agreement

Polish state-owned company Polskie Elektrownie Jadrowe (PEJ) has signed an agreement with US companies Westinghouse and Bechtel for Poland’s first nuclear power plant. Meanwhile, substantial investment in uranium mining will be essential to meet nuclear power generation projections to 2050 and beyond, a new report finds.

AI to spark a surge in global electricity demand

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to drive a significant increase in electricity consumption from data centres worldwide, according to new analysis from the International Energy Agency and BloombergNEF. However, it is also expected to provide opportunities to cut costs, enhance competitiveness and reduce emissions.

Saudi shale gas predicted to cut crude burn, while BP heralds new West African LNG production hub

Emerging sources of natural gas are shifting established patterns of supply and demand in Africa and the Middle East. In Saudi Arabia, crude burn – the direct use of crude oil in power plants and industrial facilities, primarily for electricity generation– has long been commonplace. The Kingdom burns significant volumes of oil to meet domestic electricity demand, which hovers around 171 TWh. However, analysis from Rystad Energy shows the upcoming Jafurah shale gas field, set to start production in 2025 and said to be the largest of its kind globally, could dramatically shift this dynamic. Meanwhile, BP has loaded the first cargo from the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG project offshore West Africa.

A joint development agreement (JDA) has been signed to establish the world’s first liquid hydrogen import corridor, connecting the port of Duqm in Oman, the port of Amsterdam in the Netherlands, and key logistics hubs in Germany. Meanwhile, TotalEnergies reports that green hydrogen has a key role to play in decarbonising its petrochemicals operations in Antwerp.
