Down but not out: Major cuts in coal since Paris Agreement, except in Asia

Nearly 60 countries have significantly scaled back plans for building coal-fired power plants since the Paris Agreement in 2015, according to Global Energy Monitor (GEM). But China and India continue to grow their coal power – bucking the trend. It remains to be seen whether the US will join them.

Ember reports that renewables surpass 40% clean power globally

Positive news from energy analyst Ember, which reports that the world has reached ‘a new milestone’ as low-carbon sources – renewables and nuclear – provided 40.9% of the world’s electricity generation in 2024, passing the 40% mark for the first time since the 1940s.

IATA SAF Registry goes live

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) launched the Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Registry to be managed by the Montreal, Canada-based Civil Aviation Decarbonisation Organisation (CADO), early in April. The Registry will enable a global market for SAF that will accelerate the transition to net zero by 2050.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has taken a step towards establishing a legally binding framework to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ships globally, aiming for net zero emissions by or around 2050.

New innovations are driving change in hydrogen fuel cell technologies

Recent hydrogen fuel cell advancements from Hyundai, Toyota, Ricardo and Bramble Energy continue to develop hydrogen technologies for various clean power applications. Hyundai’s latest fuel cell electric vehicle boasts enhanced power and efficiency, while Toyota’s third-generation fuel cell system goes beyond passenger cars and extends to commercial applications. Ricardo reports its multi-stack module has achieved 393 kW for maritime use and Bramble Energy’s new UK-Taiwan initiative aims to cut green hydrogen production costs.

South Korea’s energy transition gathers pace

South Korea has announced key policy developments in its energy transition. The country’s 11th Basic Plan for Long-Term Electricity Supply and Demand (BPLE) aims to expand renewables’ share in the country’s energy mix, while the new OSW Promotion Act will streamline offshore wind development. Such moves are attracting new investment; for example, Deep Wind Offshore is teaming up with KHNP to develop 3 GW of wind projects offshore South Korea, and Vena Energy is committing $200mn to the Yokji offshore wind farm.
