Female leadership: What it takes to crack the glass ceiling in the energy sector

As the global transition to clean energy accelerates, the need for diverse perspectives has never been more urgent. However, despite women constituting 39% of the global workforce, according to the International Energy Agency they account for only 16% of the traditional energy workforce. At management level, this figure is even lower. Addressing this disparity is essential not just for equity but for fostering innovation and resilience in the energy industry. Sara Siddeeq interviewed three accomplished women in the energy sector.

UK government plans to overhaul nuclear power plant planning rules in a year when global nuclear generation is set to hit an all-time high

The UK government has announced a significant overhaul of planning rules to facilitate the development of nuclear power plants, particularly Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Meanwhile, global nuclear generation is set to hit an all-time high this year, according to the International Energy Agency.

Home Office and Foreign Office: What are the priorities for the UK climate agenda?

On 5 February, at separate London events, two key figures laid out details of the UK government’s climate agenda ambitions, both within the UK and outside its borders. They were Chris Stark, Head of the UK’s Mission for Clean Power, UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, and Rachel Kyte HonFEI, UK Special Representative for Climate and Professor in Climate Policy at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford. Stark returns to the stage at International Energy Week on 26 February. New Energy World Senior Editor Will Dalrymple reports.

Cost of renewables is forecast to continue falling globally, as China extends its manufacturing lead

The cost of clean power technologies such as wind, solar and battery technologies is expected to fall by 2–11% in 2025, breaking last year’s previous cost reduction records, according to analyst BloombergNEF (BNEF). Meanwhile, China’s clean technology manufacturing capacity has led to rising protectionism in the form of import tariffs by countries hoping to prevent cheap imports upending their own energy markets. Trade barriers could temporarily stall cost declines, but BNEF still expects the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) for clean technologies to fall 22–49% by 2035.

Large scale drone scans could be the ‘Google Maps of thermal efficiency’

Electricity utility E.ON, Coventry City Council and technology startup Kestrix are using thermal camera drones and 3D heat loss modelling to collect data on housing energy efficiency and heat losses. The so-called ‘Google Maps of thermal efficiency’ aim to improve energy efficiency at the municipal level and help meet UK climate targets.
