Meanwhile, the UAE is planning what is claimed will be the world’s first 24/7 combined solar PV and battery energy storage system (BESS) gigascale project.

What is the primary energy fallacy?

Dr Jan Rosenow FEI, Senior Research Associate at Oxford and Cambridge Universities, challenges the fallacy that fossils fuels cannot be fully replaced by renewables in the energy transition. He suggests that policymakers should prioritise replacing fossil fuel technologies with efficient, zero-carbon alternatives instead of marginally more efficient fossil fuel technologies.

UK government pushes forward nuclear fusion after JET with £410mn funding

Following the 2023 closure of the European nuclear fusion R&D project JET (Joint European Torus) in Culham, Oxfordshire, after 40 years of operations, the UK government has announced £410mn of investment to accelerate the development of fusion energy over 2025 to 2026 with a long-term vision to deliver ‘a future powered by limitless clean energy’.

Eni gears up to meet a third of European SAF demand

Eni has commissioned its first plant to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the Gela biorefinery in Sicily. The plant has a capacity of 400,000 t/y, representing almost a third of European SAF demand in 2025 based on Wood Mackenzie forecasts, following implementation of the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulation.
