‘World first’ green hydrogen transport and storage demo to use existing terminal infrastructure

Exolum says it has started the world’s first demonstration of commercial-scale transport and storage of green hydrogen in existing terminal infrastructure using liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC) at its terminal in Immingham, the UK’s largest freight port.

COP29 week 2: A mixed bag of debate, new initiatives and criticism

Mixed messages have been coming from the first days of COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Despite an agreement at last year’s COP conference to transition faster from fossil fuels, there was talk of a controversial ‘gas swap’ scheme being held by Azerbaijan. Nevertheless, there was a plethora of new initiatives, though nothing yet attention grabbing on levelling the Global North and Global South divide on the financial front. Shell wins appeal against court order to cut GHG emissions

Shell has won its appeal against a landmark 2021 court ruling that had ordered the company to reduce its absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45% by the end of 2030. Why UK government hydrogen fuel research is the 21st century’s hottest energy ticket

Outside of the EU, the UK is forging its own path towards commercial production of electricity from nuclear fusion. The 2022 UK fusion strategy has sketched out a vision of building a prototype fusion reactor using a domestic design, along with fuel cycle facilities, proposals which attracted ‘significant support’ in the October 2024 budget. A panel of distinguished scientists and engineers from state R&D body the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) presented the topic to Energy Institute Fellows in September 2024. How to deliver a decarbonised transport network

Transport has represented one of the most intractable challenges as we try to piece together the decarbonisation jigsaw. Responsible for around a quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, 95% of the world’s transport energy still comes from fossil fuels. Now, we’re at a critical juncture, as many of the developed western economies, including the UK, have set (some legally enforceable) targets for the end of sale of road vehicles powered by fossil fuels. The targets are linked to the ultimate goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2050 which means end-of-sale dates for most categories of road vehicles by 2040, or earlier, writes Claire Haigh, Managing Director of Zemo Partnership, the membership organisation for road decarbonisation.

China powers up record-breaking 15 MW onshore wind turbine

Chinese wind turbine manufacturer Sany Renewable Energy recently announced on social media that it has powered up ‘the world’s largest 15 MW onshore wind turbine and successfully achieved operation at rated power’. The company also reports the turbine sets two new world records for ‘the largest single-unit capacity and the largest rotor diameter for an onshore turbine’ to date.
