A tale of two transitions: The Energy Institute’s Country Transition Tracker highlights the disparity of energy challenges faced across the world

Since taking custodianship of the Statistical Review of World Energy, the Energy Institute has published alongside it the Country Transition Tracker, which assesses the data of around 80 of the world’s largest energy-consuming countries to build a picture of progress towards targets set under the Paris Agreement. While the various metrics published highlight the extent of each country’s progress towards net zero, they do not tell the whole story. Here, Senior Energy Project Lead Gemma Fox discusses two countries that appear to stand at opposite ends of the energy transition spectrum: Iceland and Bangladesh.

Asia-Pacific needs $88.7tn of funding to meet Paris Agreement climate goals

The Asia-Pacific region must mobilise nearly $90tn in investments and boost public-private cooperation to meet the ambitious climate goals outlined in the Paris Agreement, according to the latest regional report from BloombergNEF (BNEF). Meanwhile, new analysis from Ember suggests that while demand is outpacing renewables growth in the ASEAN member states, falling clean energy costs could help readdress the balance.

Flaring emissions on the rise, reversing a positive trend, according to new analysis

Flaring emissions from global upstream oil and gas production activity increased by 7% from 2022 to 2023, reversing earlier progress made in cutting such emissions, according the latest analysis by Rystad Energy. It reports that upstream activities emit about 1 Gt/y of CO₂ in total. Flaring contributed around 30% of those emissions in 2023, assuming 98% flaring efficiency on average.

BASF secures funding for world’s most powerful industrial heat pump for CO₂-free steam generation

BASF is to receive up to €310mn from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action to build what is claimed to be the world’s largest industrial heat pump for CO₂-free steam generation at its Ludwigshafen chemicals production site in Germany.
