Mercedes-Benz opens recycling factory to close the battery loop

Mercedes-Benz has opened Europe’s first battery recycling plant using an integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical process. It is thought to be the first car manufacturer worldwide to close the battery recycling loop – albeit of only a fraction of its annual production – with its own in-house facility.

High hopes: Could south-west Europe be the Saudi Arabia of natural hydrogen?

Hydrogen is an increasingly important component of the energy transition. But where will we get it? The cheapest, cleanest source may turn out to be natural accumulations of hydrogen underground. One small village in Mali burns ‘natural hydrogen’ to generate its electricity. But, so far, that’s the sole example of real-world exploitation. For now, we don’t know whether natural hydrogen fields are large enough, or common enough, to make a significant impact on the developing hydrogen economy, writes Professor Dave Waltham, Department of Earth Sciences, Royal Holloway University London.

As global emissions hit record high, world enters climate crunch time, warns UNEP report

Continuing current climate policies could ‘lead to a catastrophic temperature rise of up to 3.1°C’, warns the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in its latest annual Emissions Gap Report. However, it adds that the 1.5°C goal set out in the Paris Agreement is ‘still technically possible to meet’, but ‘only with a G20-led massive global mobilisation to cut all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, starting today’.

Renewables continue steady progress to undercut fossil fuels in LCOE price

Wind and solar power are leading the way in reducing the levelised cost of electricity (LCOE) in 2024, according to the latest analysis from Wood Mackenzie. Although there are regional variations, the company reports that ‘overall, renewables are on a steady path towards outcompeting traditional fossil fuel sources’.

US and UK take steps to reskill workers for the energy transition

Both the US and UK are embarking on initiatives to reskill their energy workforce and ensure that workers from traditional sectors like coal, oil and gas can transition smoothly into clean energy industries. In the US, the Biden-Harris Administration has pledged $428mn to support clean energy manufacturing in former coal communities. Meanwhile, the UK is to launch an ‘Energy Skills Passport’ in early 2025, a tool designed to enable energy workers to move seamlessly between sectors, with a focus on offshore wind.
