Renewables on course to meet half of global electricity demand by 2030

Renewables are expected to meet nearly half of global demand for power by 2030, according to the latest analysis from the International Energy Agency (IEA), with more than 5,500 GW of new renewable energy capacity forecast to be installed worldwide between now and then. Two significant renewable projects, in Estonia and Australia, demonstrate how low-carbon ambitions are being made real.

Report highlights disconnection between major international banks’ net zero words and deeds

Despite major international banks setting targets to tackle climate change, the current ambition and scope of their actions ‘remain insufficient to meet climate goals’, according to the Transition Pathway Initiative (TPI) Centre. Its latest analysis finds that 85% of the banks studied remain willing to finance new coal projects; none have pledged to phase out coal financing in alignment with the 1.5°C warming target; and only 8% have committed to ending project financing of new oil and gas fields.

Our sector needs diversity, not discrimination

‘Half of survey respondents have experienced or witnessed LGBTQIA+ discrimination in the UK energy workplace.’ Not a headline you thought you’d see in 2024. And not a headline you’d expect in the UK, but this is the reality. I hope this comes as a shock to most of us who are allies of marginalised groups. But for members of the LGBTQIA+ community, it will come as no surprise. They know that just for being lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans or queer that they’re more likely to experience discrimination at work including derogatory marks, bullying and being outed without consent, writes Louise Bailey, OVO Belonging Lead and a board member of Pride in Energy.
