‘World’s first’ trial begins to recycle CO₂ captured at steel plant in Belgium

ArcelorMittal and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), together with climate tech company D-CRBN, are trialling a new technology to convert CO₂ captured at ArcelorMittal’s steel manufacturing plant in Ghent, Belgium, into carbon monoxide (CO) that can be used in steel and chemical production. Meanwhile, new analysis suggests that the auto manufacturing industry could become a lead market for low-carbon steel production in Europe if lawmakers set content requirements.

Green hydrogen hub takes shape in northern Germany

Germany’s five northern states of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony) and Schleswig-Holstein have set ambitious goals for green hydrogen development. In view of climate change and the reduction of fossil fuel resources, such as oil and gas, green hydrogen is increasingly set to become a source of energy and hope for a more sustainable world. Heike Tipmonta, Director Business Services, Hamburg Invest and HY-5 representative, describes the wide-ranging initiatives forming the HY-5 North German Green Hydrogen Strategy.

India boosts biomass by strengthening supply chains

A $100mn national programme is enabling the use of cattle dung, biomass and urban and industrial biowaste for energy recovery in India. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), these initiatives by the government may produce about 15% of India’s total energy demand. Currently, there are over 800 biomass power projects, along with bagasse and non-bagasse cogeneration projects, reports Raghavendra Verma.

Feeding our energy-hungry world

Our appetite for energy continues to grow, and with it consumption of fossil fuels, according to the 73rd Statistical Review of World Energy, published by the Energy Institute, which records the production, consumption and trade flows of fossil fuels and renewables, around the world, by region or by country. The 2023 data, published in June, reveals an increase in global energy consumption, in fossil fuels and in carbon emissions, but also an increase in renewable sources of energy. Call for robust scientific standards and transparency to improve the voluntary carbon market

Scientific principles and transparency must lead the conversation about what ‘counts’ for carbon credits to build confidence in the voluntary carbon market (VCM), says the Climate Crisis Advisory Group (CCAG). Meanwhile, new US research challenges the current thinking on the ocean’s role in storing carbon and suggests proactive steps are needed to cut emissions now, rather than relying on these natural processes to ‘buy time’ to mitigate climate change.

EC funding totalling nearly €17bn will support European energy transition projects

The European Commission (EC) has approved state funding to support the construction of a long-distance pipeline transport network for hydrogen in Germany, the deployment of two bottom-fixed wind farms offshore France, and the roll-out of biogenic carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in Sweden.

Global carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) will require $196bn in investments by 2034, with North America and Europe leading the charge, according to a new report from Wood Mackenzie. Government funding will play a crucial role, contributing $80bn across five key countries, predominantly the US, UK and Canada.
