UK government to halve subsidies paid to Drax power station from 2027

The UK government is to halve the level of subsidies paid to Drax for its biomass power plant in Selby, North Yorkshire, from 2027. This is the date when the current support mechanism ends. Stricter sustainable sourcing requirements for the plant’s feedstock of wood pellets are also to be implemented.

UK government gives green light for Drax carbon capture project

Drax Power has secured development consent from the UK government to add bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) technology to two of the four biomass units at the Drax power station in North Yorkshire, facilitating the removal of approximately 8mn t/y of CO₂ once both units are fully operational.

National Audit Office questions biomass industry sustainability standards

Over the past two decades, the UK government has provided more than £20bn of support to businesses using biomass in the power and heat sectors – a key part of its net zero ambitions. However, the government ‘cannot demonstrate’ that biomass fuel is sustainably sourced, and its assurance schemes are not good enough, according to a new report from the National Audit Office (NAO) that raises questions about future subsidies and climate goals.

Carbon removal sector in danger of missing Paris Agreement goal

The global carbon removal industry is lagging behind where it needs to be in order to meet the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target, according to a new independent assessment. Meanwhile, the National Audit Office reports it is ‘critical’ that the UK government’s carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS) programme succeeds if the country is to achieve its net zero by 2050 ambitions.
