New Indonesian President signs off $7bn gas project while reaffirming 2050 net zero target

BP and its partners have announced a final investment decision (FID) for the Tangguh UCC gas project in Indonesia, which will feature the country’s first at-scale enhanced gas recovery through carbon capture, use and storage (CCUS). Meanwhile, Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto has announced ambitious plans to phase out domestic fossil fuel power generation by 2040 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

UK government green lights more North Sea drilling

The UK government is pressing ahead with oil and gas exploration plans in the North Sea, confirming it will grant hundreds of new licences in a bid to boost British energy independence and grow the economy, despite fierce resistance from environmentalists. It has also confirmed that the Acorn and Viking projects will be the UK’s third and fourth CCUS clusters.

UK government unveils new hydrogen, nuclear and CCS investment

The UK government has unveiled a £375mn package of support for innovative energy technologies that will power British homes and businesses for decades to come. The funding includes £240mn to support the production of hydrogen as a clean, low-cost energy technology, £2.5mn to develop next-generation nuclear technology and a further £5mn towards research into carbon capture.

Major CCS project to advance decarbonisation efforts across Texas Gulf Coast

BP and Linde have unveiled plans to advance a major carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Texas, US, that will enable low carbon hydrogen production at Linde’s existing facilities. The development will also support the storage of CO₂ captured from other industrial facilities – paving the way for large-scale decarbonisation of the Texas Gulf Coast industrial corridor.

UK government announces new £102mn funding for nuclear and hydrogen technologies

The UK government has further backed the future of nuclear power by investing £77mn to support nuclear fuel production and next generation advanced nuclear reactors in the UK. It has also unveiled a further £25mn of funding for innovative technologies that could generate hydrogen from biomass and waste and is seeking views on proposals to make domestic gas boilers hydrogen-ready from 2026. However, a Commons Committee warns that hydrogen is not a panacea to meeting net zero.
