Japan’s draft energy strategy attracts criticism on clean energy and decarbonisation grounds

Japan has published a draft of its seventh Strategic Energy Plan (SEP), which outlines the country’s energy transition goals for 2040. The plan has been criticised by energy think tanks and climate analysts for a lack of ambition in renewable energy adoption, coal phase-out and fossil fuel reduction. Those issues could, they say, potentially jeopardise Japan’s decarbonisation efforts and economic stability.

Report calls for urgent industry decarbonisation ramp up

Without decarbonisation intervention, industrial emissions will grow from 6.7bn tonnes of CO₂ this year to 7.6bn tonnes of CO₂/y by 2050, according to a new report from BloombergNEF (BNEF). Further analysis from BNEF has also found that at least $21.4tn will need to be invested in the electricity grid by 2050 to support a net zero trajectory for the world.

Nations of the Andes power ahead with plans for an interconnected regional electricity market and other grid improvements

The South American countries of Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru have signed a declaration underlining a commitment to integrating their electricity grids to form an Andean regional electricity market. In other news, Bolivia is planning significant investments in its electricity infrastructure to enhance capacity and access to energy around the administrative capital of La Paz, while Chile is modernising regulations to improve electricity access and quality in remote regions. Additionally, Bolivia aims to reduce fuel imports with a new biodiesel plant due onstream later this year.
