Brazil announces free power scheme for 17 million low-income homes during gas-fired power plant inauguration ceremony

The Brazilian government is planning to improve access to energy for some of the country’s poorest families by providing financial support to those struggling to pay for electricity. The announcement came as President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Minister of Mines and Energy Alexandre Silveira officially inaugurated the 1.7 GW GNA II natural gas-fired thermoelectric plant, in Porto do Açu, Rio de Janeiro, the largest in Brazil.

UK windfall tax could end if energy prices fall

The UK government has announced that the Energy Profits Levy, which puts a marginal tax rate of 75% on North Sea oil and gas production, will remain in place until March 2028 while oil and gas prices remain higher than historic norms, but will fall back to 40% when prices ‘consistently return to normal levels for a sustained period’.

Poland ramps up offshore wind as energy security dominates political agenda

Poland is focused on developing its domestic offshore wind supply chain in a bid to become the leading offshore wind player in the Baltic Sea, according to trade industry association WindEurope. Construction of two substations for the country’s first offshore wind farm were recently completed, marking the start of commercial-scale offshore wind development in Polish waters. Meanwhile, the Polish Presidency of the Council of the EU has made energy security and industrial competitiveness two of its main priorities.
