UK government plans to extend energy support as household costs continue to rise

Ofgem has announced a 6.4% increase in the energy price cap from April to June 2025. In response, the UK government is looking to expand its Warm Home Discount, to help more households facing financial difficulties to meet rising energy costs. Meanwhile, the government’s independent infrastructure advisor is calling for a ‘step change’ in grid investment.

Global additions of renewable power capacity are expected to jump by a third this year as growing policy momentum, higher fossil fuel prices and energy security concerns drive strong deployment of solar and wind power, according to the latest update from the International Energy Agency (IEA).

Hydrogen supply chains gather pace from Scotland to Abu Dhabi, but UK demo shelved

A number of new developments have been announced that support the development of the hydrogen supply chain in Europe and the Middle East. Among latest projects, RWE plans to develop a green hydrogen project in Scotland; a new cooperation agreement will see the Port of Rotterdam establish itself as an international hydrogen hub for north-west Europe; and Cepsa’s latest award of contracts underpin its Andalusian Green Hydrogen Valley project in Spain. Also, new developments support Abu Dhabi-based ADNOC’s goal of capturing 5% of the global low-carbon hydrogen market by 2030.

China’s next five-year plan backs clean energy but leaves emissions targets unclear, says CREA

China has released the draft outline of its 15th Five-Year Plan, setting out the country’s economic, energy and climate priorities for the period 2026–2030. The blueprint is broadly supportive of clean energy development, including a target to reduce CO₂ emissions per unit of GDP – carbon intensity – by 17% compared to 2005 levels between 2026–2030.

UK Autumn Statement: More heat on average energy users and 45% levy on low carbon electricity generators

UK Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced a raft of new tax measures in his Autumn Budget, bringing UK taxation to the highest level since World War 2. Energy-related measures were particularly significant and included a new windfall tax on low carbon electricity generators, and the introduction of a vehicle excise duty on electric vehicles by 2025.

Global energy markets face unprecedented uncertainty and a 1.5°C pathway remains increasingly challenging

The latest Global Energy Perspective report from McKinsey & Company finds that global energy markets ‘face unprecedented uncertainty’ as the economic rebound after the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered price spikes for multiple commodities, and the conflict in Ukraine has led to further increasing energy prices and security of supply concerns. As a result, a 1.5°C pathway remains ‘increasingly challenging’.
