Parties clash as UK energy policy turns into political battleground

Energy has become one of the most fiercely contested issues in British politics, as the main political parties issued new statements setting out sharply diverging visions for the country’s future energy mix. UK launches new offshore licencing round while new report says North Sea oil and gas development is at odds with climate goals

The UK’s North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) has launched a new offshore licensing round as part of government plans to boost security of energy supplies. However, a new report from Global Energy Monitor claims that emissions from new oil and gas development in the North Sea could contribute to the UK exceeding its carbon budget for 2023–2037 by a factor of two.

Life of UK nuclear power plants to be extended

EDF Energy, which manages the UK’s fleet of nuclear power stations, is planning to invest a further £1.3bn in order to maintain output at current levels until at least 2026, and hopefully beyond. Meanwhile, the UK and US governments are looking to establish domestic supplies of the high-assay low enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel required to power next-generation nuclear reactors in a bid to reduce Russia’s market domination.

Significant investment scale-up required to meet Australia’s hydrogen ambitions

Australia has ambitions to be a major hydrogen exporter as it transitions to a net zero economy; while new analysis suggests that running a hydrogen plane could be cheaper than traditional aircraft by 2035, providing the right taxation is in place.
